About Our Collection
The mission of the Dewey Primary School library of Dewey, Illinois is to create a library atmosphere that helps every child flourish. To that end, we work to provide our students with opportunities to build their phonic skills and develop concepts of print, to encourage their creativity, and to build their reading and oral fluency.
Our growing story bag collection was made possible with a grant from the Coalition for Diversity in Children’s Books. With this grant, we were able to build a collection of themed story bags aimed at our young and emergent readers (PK to G2), and with additional information for their teachers, parents and caregivers. In addition to books, these story bags are enriched with interactive materials such as puppets, storytelling toys, activities, games, journals and more. Our hope for this collection is to foster the idea of the library as an active space and of stories as living, breathing entities, by providing children with materials that make learning fun and can be used in ‘acting-out’ stories and books.
